Cloudflare Outage: 20% Sites Down, CEO Blames Tech Glitch
Cloudflare, the internet security and content delivery network provider, experienced its most severe outage since 2019 on Tuesday morning, impacting a significant number of websites and services including OpenAI, Spotify, and X. The disruption began around 3:30 a.m. PT and lasted for several hours, causing widespread inconvenience to users globally. According to W3Techs, Cloudflare serves about 20% of all websites, making this outage particularly noteworthy.
Initially, Cloudflare suspected a cyberattack, possibly a DDoS attack, but investigations revealed an internal software failure as the root cause. CEO Matthew Prince clarified that while the company had not previously experienced such a major outage, the issue stemmed from a technical glitch within their own systems. This unexpected failure led to the temporary shutdown of core traffic through Cloudflare's network.
Despite the significant impact, Cloudflare managed to restore services relatively quickly, with most sites returning to normal operation within three hours. The company's transparency was evident as they provided a detailed explanation of the technical issues and steps taken to resolve them, emphasizing that the outage was not due to external cyber threats but rather an internal technical malfunction.
