Golden Lederer Portrait Now $236M; Art Looted Gem Returns
A recent Sotheby's auction in New York saw Gustav Klimt's Portrait of Elisabeth Lederer sell for an astonishing $236.4 million, breaking records and cementing its status as the second most expensive artwork ever sold at auction. The six-foot-tall painting, depicting a young heiress in a Chinese robe, has captivated bidders with its intricate gold leaf and vibrant colors, a hallmark of Klimt's unique style.
The sale of this Klimt masterpiece not only highlights the enduring value of modern art but also underscores the complex history of the piece. Originally looted by the Nazis during World War II and nearly destroyed in a fire, Portrait of Elisabeth Lederer was returned to her rightful heir, Erich Lederer, in 1948. Over the years, it remained in private hands, with Este Lauder's collection being a notable owner before its eventual sale. The painting's journey through private collections and its eventual return to its rightful owner adds layers of historical significance to its current market value.
Art historian Emily Braun, who had worked closely with Lauder's estate, noted that the painting was a prized possession of Leonard A Lauder, one of Klimt's closest friends. Braun described it as the "jewel" of Lauder's collection, frequently enjoyed for lunch by him and his family. The sale of Portrait of Elisabeth Lederer not only surpassed previous records but also set a new benchmark for Klimt paintings, surpassing the $108 million record set by Lady with a Fan in 2023, further solidifying Klimt's legacy in the art world.
