Australian teenagers are set to face a significant social media curtailment as Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, begins enforcing a new ban targeting users under 16 by December 10. The notice, which will be communicated via email, SMS, and in-app messages, informs users that their accounts will be deactivated starting Thursday, with full access revoked by the end of the month. This move aligns with the Albanese government's initiative to curb social media use among young Australians.
The notification process is designed to be transparent, giving users 14 days' warning through multiple channels to prepare for the transition. Meta will provide detailed instructions on how to manage accounts, including options to download and save content before deactivation, ensuring that users can preserve their digital memories until they turn 16 or opt out entirely.
Mia Garlick, Meta's regional policy director, emphasized the company's commitment to maintaining a safe and age-appropriate online environment, noting that the ban will allow teenagers to access content without the risks associated with unregulated platforms. However, Meta faces challenges in accurately identifying users under 16, highlighting the need for parents to verify birth dates to prevent potential misidentifications and ensure compliance with the new regulations.
